Joseph Akins

Musician

A pianist, keyboardist, composer, producer, educator, based in Nashvlle, TN, Joseph Akins has been a professional musician for over 30 years. It began when he was recruited to play in his father's country band at age 10. Since, he has performed both as a soloist and with a variety of artists and groups including Terri Rice, Jerry Coker, Blaze and others. His influences range from traditional country music to modern jazz, but the sound of his original music eludes any categorization. He has recorded and produced two sound recordings that have touched people all over the world. "Keys to the Heart", released in 1997, received favorable airplay and use in short film. "Masterpeace", released in 2007, has received national acclaim as a high quality recording of awe-inspiring solo piano music. Since it's release, Joseph has been featured on radio stations such as Nashville Public Radio, Whisperings and Sky.fm, and he continually performs the music through solo concerts and Whisperings concerts. In addition to being an active pianist, keyboardist, composer and producer, Joseph gives to the world through education. He is an award-winning professor of recording industry at Middle Tennessee State University where his students refer to him as Dr. A.

Vanessa Albury

Vanessa Albury, a Nashville native, is a contemporary artist working in Brooklyn. She received her MFA in Studio Art from NYU's Steinhardt School. Albury’s work is image and process-based, taking form in photographs, films, videos, sculptural objects, installations and interdisciplinary collaborations. Her practice explores the simple and eternal and where we overlap and where we miss each other. Albury uses analog materials to discuss ephemerality and invites spontaneous occurrences in everyday moments. Recent solo shows include A Stilled Cascade of Image at Window Box Gallery (Oslo) curated by Thale Fastvold and In Waves at Monty ABN (Antwerp) curated by Jan Van Woensel. Her work has been reviewed for Frieze, SF Guardian, Hyperallergic, Eyes Towards the Dove and the NY Times. Albury completed three residencies this year at Lofoten Kunstkvareteret, Arctic Circle Program and AiR Nordland. Audrey Tran covered Albury’s work in the Arctic for Artiholics. Albury also co-curates DSNY, a traveling artists’ multiples pop-up, and The Sun That Never Sets, a nomadic, artist-run, incubator gallery for film and video artists. She writes for Art Pulse and Huff Post.

Morgan Alexander

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Morgan Alexander traveled 2,500 miles to seek opportunities in the music city itself, Nashville, TN. Since 2009, not only has he progressed in his music career, but he has found a place that allows him to pursue his passion in the music industry. Singer, songwriter, musician, radio personality, and entertainer, Morgan is sharing his talent and passion with the world to fall in love with too! Throughout his career, Morgan has played with Collin Raye, Little Big Town, Kellie Pickler, Miranda Lambert, Eric Church, John Michael Montgomery, and James Otto. The recent release of his EP “The Story Maker” lets fans indulge the sounds from his vocal training and upbringing in the jazz/blues genre, to his recent stories told on country radio stations. Olga Alexeeva came from Moscow, Russia in 1991. She was a professional actress for 13 years in different theaters and had no idea how she would survive in a strange land. She spoke no English, but had hopes of a better life and peace of mind. After years of hard work and dedication, she became a cirizen of the USA. Now she is an inspired artist, grateful to her frineds and teachers. Olga's work reflects her numerous European travels, as well as her philosophical meditation about the universe encompassed in a drop of water. Her use of bold and intensive color reflects her active, playful nature, with the positive outlook and hope for tomorrow. Now she has 2 galleries : "O"Gallery at Arcade, where she hosts different artists for monthly Art Crawl. And "O"Gallery at Marathon, full service gallery, open 7 days a week, where she displays mostly her own work. She is giving the art lessons for beginners and holding the Art parties for fun learning. Morgan C. Allred

Morgan Christopher Allred is a mixed heritage Kansan that was born on an Army base in El Paso, TX. He has performed spoken word poetry for four years now and has been writing much longer. In Kansas, he was previously the host/organizer/promoter of 3 poetry related events: That Sound Downtown, Slambonanza and End Iron Rhymes, as well as host of the Access Television show, Froze In Poetic Prose. Here, in Nashville, he hosts Po'Boys & Poets every third Saturday at the Peach Cobbler Factory. Having performed all across Kansas, Missouri and now Tennessee he has been able to work and create with a multitude of artists and their respective mediums. His work in promotion/organization has allowed him to work directly with non-profits like NAACP (Salina), Equality Kansas, Concert Across America and Poetry Outloud as well as organize shows sponsored by Salina's Arts and Humanities.

bio: i grew up a southern girl from a smallish town, desperate to get away and find adventure. i absorbed glossy page after glossy page of fashion magazines and daydreamed of all things beautiful. i sketched elaborate dresses that friends, family and neighbors found fascinating. those scraps of encouragement, as well as my own unwavering passion, led me to study fashion design and art at virginia tech. to prepare for a move to new york city, i sewed up little outfits for myself and sketched away for my portfolio, desperately hoping the pants i made and wore to interviews looked like helmut lang and not home ec. i found design jobs with small companies and then came the holy grail, master of minimalism, calvin klein. working under his vision was the realization of all my fantasies. i visited the moma, whitney and my personal favorite, dia for inspiration. along the way, i began to paint in my tiny apartment. it felt wonderful to create something for myself; there were no parameters. over the years, i’ve continued to paint. landscapes, abstracts, flowers. fanciful paintings of birds and branches for her walls when my daughter was born. but moving to nashville opened a whole new chapter in my work. i was compelled to paint. i obsessed over developing my techniques, more ideas in my head than i could get out. as soon as each painting was finished, i was already starting another, had it laid out in my mind, anxious to see it in person. a musician came over for dinner, as they so often do. and she said, “it's time to put them out there. invite everyone.” so i did and you’re here. thank you. i am delighted to share with you.

Artistic Style My childhood was split between living on the bayous of Louisiana and living in Nashville, Tennessee; thus I was influenced by both cultures. Many of my paintings have a psychological story and include fairies, angels, spirits, and bright colors. Some people describe my artistic style as expressionistic, fantasy, or any combination of the two. I've always had my own style, and my paintings reflect the struggles I've been through in life. I am basically self- taught in art, though I was exposed to some teachers such as the late Juanita Greene Parks and Hazel King, and did some independent studies at Belmont College. David Andersen

Ladies in pink straw cowboy hats, Norwegian businessmen, buses full of weekend tourists, rainbow chasing dreamers—every day brings an endless stream of visitors to Nashville, Tennessee, seeking an experience unlike anything other cities have to offer. They want to meet a spectacular musician or artist and shake their hand…maybe get an autograph. They long to hear the local stories about their favorite legends or what it’s like to be “in the business.” They all want to explore American music and have a personal encounter with fame. Each and every day, strolling the hallowed halls of an “unbroken circle” or amid the stars that line the Walk of Fame, ambling among the crowd at large events or anywhere in Nashville where music is a cornerstone, an immensely talented, soft-spoken man in an understated suit and sunglasses stands waiting to greet them with a warm smile and a song. He is David Andersen, the Ambassador of Music City. His mission is to give Nashville’s visitors the authentic experience they seek. A child music prodigy reared in Long Beach, California, Andersen could play music before he could talk. An accomplished songwriter and proficient on multiple instruments, as a teen, Andersen launched his music career when he walked barefooted into Hollywood’s Criterion Music office and requested studio work. Despite this extraordinary entrance into the business, Andersen became a session player, working at United Audio, A&M Studios, Wally Heider, Sound Factory, Elektra, Eldorado and Capitol Records Studios. While still a teen, he was signed by mogul Randy Wood and released his first record on Ranwood Records. His music also led him to the top L.A. clubs, including the Golden Bear and Whiskey a Go-Go, and in the company of many elder statesmen of the blues, including Big Joe Turner, Joe Houston, Bobby Day, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. He has proudly held the audience of important music people, such as David Geffen, Clive Davis and Les Paul and has shared the stage and opened shows for acts such as Jackson Browne, Tom Waits, Doc Watson and Bruce Springsteen. His musical travels eventually led Andersen to Nashville, where he became a fixture at Slice of Life and Café 123. While Andersen could boast success on both the West Coast and in Nashville, Andersen’s real focus is the music itself and the unique relationship he enjoys with music fans. “The magic of music is in people’s response to it. I’m fulfilled only if I can touch their hearts. Regardless of where they are from or what language they speak, music is universal, so I can always connect with them through my music. I want visitors to leave here inspired to enjoy music in whatever way works for them—learning to play, listening to new genres or exploring the stories behind the music. My job as ambassador is to help them rediscover what they love about music.” Andersen has personally greeted more than one million documented visitors while performing well over 2000 daily shows at Sobro Grill in the lobby of the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum since it opened nearly a decade ago. Also a staple at Walk of Fame® Inductions and Medallion Ceremonies, CMA MusicFests and at the Union Station Hotel, Andersen seems to be everywhere tourists flock or music matters. He’s a celebrity without stardom, yet he’s been consistently recognized by the media over the past seven years for his musical representation. He’s been called a “Nashville treasure,” “the face of Music City,” “the Ambassador of pickin’ and grinin’” and even “a complement to the museum, as interactive as any pushbutton display.” “The comments that we receive from our guests and visitors only further solidify the fact that David enriches the visitor experience of thousands of people each year,” says Jesse Goldstein, president of TomKats Inc. “His gentlemanly nature and musical talent are wonderful representations of the best qualities of Nashville. We have many visitors who return to Sobro Grill at the Country Music Hall of Fame just to see David.” Butch Spyridon, president of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau views Andersen as a wonderful asset to tourism. “By shining a spotlight on some of Music City’s most colorful places and famous landmarks, David has conveyed to the word the unique character and creativity that makes this city so special.” With Andersen, there are no formal “meet and greets” or autograph sessions, no production techniques or backstage passes. He simply approaches and begins his personal relationship with fans with a simple question: “What’s your favorite song?” And he can always deliver. Andersen knows thousands of songs from many nations. He knows classic country, modern country, jazz, rock and a host of national anthems. In a style reminiscent of greats, such as Chet Atkins, Uncle Mavis and Earl Scruggs, yet completely his own, pure tradition rolls from David’s vintage Epiphone as his fingers ripple effortlessly across the fretboard. He answers requests with soft music that fills the air like an ethereal whisper from the past, while Andersen continues his query— “where you are from, what brings you Nashville and have you ever been here before?” If you have, he probably remembers you. “As the Ambassador of Music City, I consider it part of my job to remember…. I might not remember your name, but I’ll remember faces, favorite songs or hometowns.” Between songs, he poses for photos, signs autographs and collects information from visitors in his own autograph book. Andersen ends his courtship as simply as he begins. He leaves his new friends with his signature guitar pick and a challenge…to remember why they came to Nashville and to take time to enjoy the music they came here to find. Mark Anthony

The Mark Anthony Ensemble is an Acoustic group out of Franklin, TN and led by Singer/Songwriter & Guitarist, Mark Anthony. Playing a variety of Ballads, Blues, and Contemporary Country flavored originals by Mark, the Group plays at various Venues and Songwriter Showcases showing their unique Americana style and blending the sounds of the Acoustic & Electric Guitars, Bass, Drums & Percussion. The Group is: Mark Anthony – BMI Affiliate Singer-Songwriter / Acoustic Guitar / Lead Vocals Jasco Duende – Electric & Acoustic Guitars / Lap Steel Paul Presson – Drums/Percussion/Vocals Tracy Cain – Bass Guitars Mark Anthony is originally from the NE and got his start in Folk/Rock groups while attending the University of Connecticut, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a minor in Music. Upon graduation, Mark toured New England for 5 years with the Acoustic Band “On The Road Again”, culminating in a six week Tour in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He returned home to play in several Rock Bands until he discovered the new Country styles of the 80’s forming the Country/Rock Band, “Caribou” – the only CT Band to win the State Finals in the Dodge/True Value Hardware Country Showdown. Mark moved to Nashville in 1987, started appearing in the Songwriter circuit and eventually performed on local TV where he was chosen to represent Nashville in the Discovery Television’s National Talent Search. He was selected as First Runner Up, attracting the ear of BMI’s Jody Williams. Mark soon met John Bellar, aka ‘Johnny B’, a champion Bluegrass Dobroist. The two hit it off musically, and became an acoustic Duo. In 2016, after a 20 year hiatus, they decided to reunite and began to form the original Mark Anthony Ensemble. Mark is a BMI Affiliate Songwriter and continues to write original songs gaining notoriety as an Artist in the Greater Nashville area. Nerissa Aquino

Choreographer; Dancer; Educator: Youth; Visual Artist; Visual Artist: Mixed Media; Visual Artist: Photography

Nerissa represents DancEast Workshop (DEW) as the DEW Coordinator of this outreach program and non-for-profit arm of DancEast Studios. A Nashville native, she grew up taking ballet and jazz under the late Wanda Lenk Walters, but found modern dance as her artistic movement-of-choice while in college at Elon University. Additionally, she learned the folk dances of her parent’s homeland, the Philippines, with the local Phil-Am Association; African dance while studying abroad in Ghana; and traditional dances of Kiribati as a U.S. Peace Corps Health Volunteer. In 2005, she joined City Ballet Theatre, a non-for-profit dance school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 2007 back at home, the Vanderbilt Dance Program prepared her for performing opportunities as a guest dancer with local companies Blue Moves, Company Rose, Chinese Arts Alliance, and other roles for Nashville-based choreographers. She trained under Banning Bouldin and served as one of New Dialect’s first company members. Since June 2015, she has collaborated with the young DEW dancers to create a piece performed outdoors at Shelby Bottoms Nature Center. “Echoes of Vitality” is her first time directing and creating choreography with youth for a public event. She brings her experience working in social services and non-for-profits to her role at DancEast. Nerissa’s passion is to contribute to the possibilities of movement for anyone wishing to explore dance wellness through movement stretching from the dance studios out to the spaces found in nature. She hopes to engage people from all walks of life into such creative exploration and well-being.

Sarah Arace

Sarah Arace is an artist of assorted expressions including drawing, painting, chalk art and mixed media. Her passion stems from personal experiences of overcoming adversity and learning to embrace and appreciate her own imperfections. Her creative inspiration was born from her experiences of a young girl raised in Huntington, West Virginia, and becoming a single mother at 16 years of age. She appreciates the opportunity to use her passion to inspire and empower others through her artwork. Sarah resides in Nashville, TN with her husband and two dogs and is currently working on two series. “Masked heroes” portraits in watercolor formed around essential workers, is her first series. The second, called “HER,” is an expressionistic style of favorite body parts from a group of women who have positively influenced and inspired Sarah throughout her journey.

Jerry Arhelger

I had my first band when I was 12, was in the recording studio at 15 and was recording in Nashville with a label at 19. I was first in Nashville in 1971. I started touring internationally 30 years ago. Performed, toured and worked with some great folks through the years. Been in magazines, done radio, television, played major events and I still love what I do. I've had songs on Country and Gospel charts and I'm now doing more Americana events. Just finished my 71st Concert tour in the United Kingdom and Europe. I had cancer a few years ago and was in and out of bed for over 2 years. I was never expected to live or speak a few times. Doing great now and singing, writing and performing more than ever. Praise the Lord for His miracles. By God's grace I live, move and have my being. I thank the Lord daily for the opportunities and the experiences that He has given me.

Daniel Arite

Daniel Arite is a multi-media artist whose works for live performance, mixed media and electronic media employ various processes of layering imagery and sound. Over the past 15 years he has been exploring the interaction of word and sound through “audio collage” and recently began producing independent video. He works in collaboration with a wide range of artists incorporating poetry, experimental texts, voice, and percussion. A professional musician since the 1980’s, his repertoire ranges from new music to jazz to bluegrass and he has distinguished himself as a creative soloist and collaborator.

Tramaine Arte'Mis

Singer; Songwriter

Sultry, soulful vocalist Tramaine Arte’Mis is becoming widely known for her tremendous range and expressive vocal talents. She is equally at home in musical theatre, opera, gospel, R&B, smooth jazz and neo soul. Her soaring, expressive voice hints at influences that range from Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn to Minnie Riperton, India Arie, Maysa and John Legend and so many more. Born Tramaine Robinson in Knoxville, Tramaine Arte’Mis immersed herself in music as a child. Her first memories are of harmonizing with her talented family members and landing a solo performance at age three. She distinguished herself in church, high school and college choirs. She was tapped to perform behind R&B recording artist Kem at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center for his 2013 Christmas tour and has been a mainstay of Neo Soul Lounge performances at various locations in and around Nashville such as The Frist Center. In 2016 Tramaine Arte'Mis had the pleasure of singing at The Jazz and Blues Festival in Nashville, TN and in recent made her first international appearance at the Sumerset Music City Jazz Festival with her band The Improv 7 Jazz Band. Tramaine Arte’Mis recently released her single "Connected" which is now is available at CD Baby, ITunes, Google play, and Amazon Music and return to the studio, with plans to release a CD (EP) in the near future.

Jerry Atnip

Jerry Atnip has a 41-year career as a commercial and fine art photographer. He began as Partner and Creative Director of an ad agency in Nashville as well as Director of its’ photography department. His images have been published in 40 countries, and since 2003, he’s held over 80 exhibitions and been presented with over 100 awards. He is also a teacher, workshop director, curator, juror and frequent lecturer. He is on the boards of several Arts & Photography organizations, including Atlanta Celebrates Photography festival and Slow Exposures Photofestival. His work has been collected by museums, corporate and private collectors and he is an Exhibiting Member of The National Arts Club in New York shere he maintains a studio. ArmaniDae Photography was founded in December 2010 by Philadelphia native Armani "Armani/Dae". Armani began dabbling in photography when he realized it was both fun and therapeutic to which it became his main hobby and now career. The business name derived from Armani's name and nickname "Dae" (pronounced Day) put together. Originally the name was ArmaniDae Inc Photography but was later shortened. ArmaniDae Photography (often shortened to ArmaniDae) has been featured and published in the newspaper, multiple websites, album covers and more. Continuing to progress in photography, Armani is constantly using his creative vision to spread awareness especially when collaborating with different organizations across the world, as well as sharing life's captured moments with you.
